A downloadable game for Windows
In 4 Towers of Nerdstorm, wizards find themselves imprisoned in a malevolent alternate dimension by the cunning Lord Nerdstorm. This 2D puzzle-shooter roguelike invites you to master the arcane arts of four distinct schools of magic: Dark, Light, Fire, and Frost. Each spell is intricately bound to polyomino puzzle pieces that must be socketed into your weapons, allowing you to create a unique and devastating loadout.
As you journey through the ever-shifting, procedurally generated levels, you’ll need to think quickly and adapt your strategy to overcome the relentless forces of Nerdstorm. Mix and match your spells to unleash devastating combos, discover hidden synergies, and outwit your foes with clever tactics. With each run, new challenges and treasures await, ensuring that no two playthroughs are ever the same. Prepare to outsmart and outcast the evil Lord Nerdstorm, or be forever trapped in his chaotic realm.

Good fun game. It's come along quite nicely.
Been following this game for a while and it's so much fun! The innovative staff/spell gem idea is one of a kind, very creative! Love seeing the progress year after year, keep it up!
The game has come far in a lot of ways. I love the art, world, and enemies.
The main hook of the game feels very clunky because of the control scheme. I'd encourage you to try VERY hard to remove any unnecessary unique key binds, and try to remove the need to even press a key wherever possible. For instance- the wand and storage should be on one page. (removes the need for 1 and 3 keys, and allows you to see your inventory and the spaces available) clicking on an item should pick it up. you could probably use the same key to pick up a wand from the ground and to enter the portal etc.
basically wherever possible try to simplify the control scheme. the core gameplay and work put into building the world really deserves a chance, and people won't give it a chance if they get hung up on the controls like this.
Yo Ben! Thanks for giving it another shot. I appreciate the feedback. Meshing the puzzle UI/UX in with the combat has, hands down, been the most challenging part of developing 4TONS. I'll definitely take this all into consideration!
In the default control scheme, picking up the staff and entering a portal are both bound to the interact key, F. There's a slim chance your old custom keybind profile from a previous build might be giving you a weird experience . In the Main Menu, go Settings -> Controls -> Reset to Default and try going through the tutorial for the new controls.
The staff and inventory was previously one page, but it's been consolidated for screen real estate in co-op, and I did the same in single player for consistency. I understand the friction there, so I'm brewing up a few other creative solutions to the problem.
Clicking on an item on the ground can't pick up items, because left click is your primary attack, as it is in every Shmup. This would likely result in accidentally picking up a puzzle piece mid combat and getting ganked.
Give it another shot with the default keybinds (or a controller!) and let me know your thoughts.
Thanks!
Nice update! I didn't realize what project this was even though I'm subscribed, I'd recommend making the thumbnail a close up screenshot or something that shows the main game mechanic rather than the "4tons" text banner which doesn't tell me anything. "Wandcrafting Roguelite" I'd think would generate some interest but the thumbnail doesn't convey that concept.
It's 'F' to go through the portal now, but it's one of the few actions that doesn't have a text helper yet, the text on the other actions was a great addition
Love the improvements keep it up!
Woahh this was way bigger of a project than i expected. Super sick. Had trouble figuring out 'G' to go through the portal, and 'tab' to turn off the wand ui after you open it with 'G'. Love the mashing of ideas and the wand inventory shapes. The art and vibe is super fun. love it keep it up
Thanks a TON, Ben! I appreciate the input. I'm working on adding some UI prompts that pull from the player settings, which should hopefully smooth out those sticking points. Coming soon to Steam, keep an eye out! -Ryan
